A browser is not a VPN and does not hide your IP address. Sites you visit and your network operator can still see it. Tracking protection is list-based and not absolute: known ads, analytics, and social trackers from bundled lists are blocked on the device, but no blocker catches everything. The short answer is no. A private browser does not hide your IP address. It does not change the address your network presents to the public internet. Sites you open can still see it. The carrier or Wi-Fi operator that gave you a connection can still see that the device used the network, and often which hosts you contacted. People type the question because the word private sounds like a cloak, and because some apps blur browser, blocker, and tunnel in the same screenshot. Those are different tools. This page keeps them apart so a no-history session is not mistaken for a new identity on the wire.
What an IP address is doing in a page load
When you request a URL, packets leave the phone, cross a network, and reach a server. The server has to know where to send the response. That return path is your public IP, or the address of whatever NAT your network uses. The site logs it because that is how the conversation is addressed. A private tab does not negotiate a different address. Omitting a history file on the phone does not either.
Your network operator sits on the path before the public internet. Depending on the network, that operator can see destinations, SNI or similar host hints, or at least that a device was online. Workplace and school networks add their own logs and portals. None of those observers are inside the browser’s history database. Deleting or never writing that database does not reach them.
This is ordinary internet plumbing. It is not a flaw unique to Private Browser Incognito. Safari private browsing, a forgetful browser, and a private mode in any other app all still originate requests from the same connection unless you have separately configured a VPN in iOS. We do not ship that tunnel, and we do not market this app as one.
What a private browser is actually for
Local privacy is still a real job. A forgetful browser holds every tab as a private session in memory. There is no browsing history feature and no history file to clear. Cookies and cache exist for the life of the session, then one-tap erase destroys them. That is about residue on the device: what a borrowed phone can show, what a Settings pane would have listed, what a Recents row would have kept. On-device blocking is a second local job. Ads, analytics, and social trackers can be stopped by content-blocking rules powered by the open Disconnect lists. The lists ship inside the app and run on the device. They are not downloaded at runtime. The app does not sit in the middle of your traffic as a proxy. Blocking reduces known third-party noise. It does not hide your IP from the first-party site you typed.
App Lock, a six-digit passcode and Face ID, hides the session from someone who picks up the phone. That is access control, not network identity. HTTPS-Only Mode, on by default, asks before falling back to insecure HTTP. Encryption is not IP hiding. The site still sees who connected.
VPN, proxy, and Tor are other products
A VPN wraps traffic and presents a different address to the sites you visit, under the trust model of that VPN operator. A proxy is a hop you configure. Tor is a relay network with its own tradeoffs. Private Browser Incognito is none of those. We do not claim IP hiding, fingerprint spoofing as a product, or anonymity on the network. If iOS already has a VPN you enabled yourself, the system routes traffic; we do not market that as a feature of this browser.
Search engines are not a VPN either. You can choose Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, or a custom engine. A query you send is still a request that engine can log, from an IP it can see. Suggestions stay off by default. The app asks before sharing a keystroke. Choosing a privacy-oriented engine changes who receives the query. It does not hide the IP from that engine.
There are no accounts and no app server for browsing. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected: no analytics SDK, no ads in the app, no third-party SDKs. We do not see your IP as a browsing dashboard because we do not run one. The sites you visit still do. That distinction is easy to flatten in a feature list and worth keeping sharp.
Who still sees the address
The site you opened sees the IP, ordinary browser headers, and whatever you type. If you signed into an account, the account is you. Incognito does not cancel that. The wider map of what private mode never covers is in What Incognito Mode Does Not Hide.
Your network operator sees the device on the network. On a home connection that is often the household. On cellular it is the carrier. On employer or school Wi-Fi it may be a logged, named network. A private browser cannot audit or erase those records.
Someone standing next to the phone sees whatever is on the screen, the app switcher, and screenshots you took. Those are operating-system surfaces. Erase and lock help with the app’s own session. They do not unsay a screenshot.
Safari private browsing does not hide IP either
It is fair to say this without turning it into a dunk. Safari private browsing is a real mode. It is still Safari talking to servers from the same connection. The architecture difference that matters locally is history: a mode inside a browser that also stores history, versus a specialized app that never writes the file. If a table claims one iPhone browser hides IP and another does not, ask how. Unless the product is a VPN (or you enabled one in Settings), the honest cell is “still visible.” Rated 17+ still matters here: unrestricted web access means real requests to real hosts, with real addressing.
Why the local job is still worth doing
Hiding IP is the wrong test for this category. The right tests are: is there a history file, do block lists live on the device, does erase destroy the session, is there an account, and does the product admit the network limit. Private Browser Incognito is built so there is nothing to trust us with. Sites still see requests. Phones still get borrowed. Lists still miss names.

Does a private browser hide your IP address? No. Use one for the rows it can actually change. If you need the IP row changed, that is a VPN conversation, not a browser mode. Keeping those sentences separate is the entire honest product.
