A browser is not a VPN. Incognito, private mode, deleting history, and omitting a history file do not hide your IP address from sites you visit or from your network operator. Tracking protection is list-based and not absolute: known ads, analytics, and social trackers from bundled lists are blocked on the device, but no blocker catches everything. Incognito and deleting history get used as if they were the same verb. They are not. One is a timing story about a list that was written and then removed. The other is a story about a list that never existed. The interval in the middle is the whole difference. Someone who unlocks the phone before you tap Clear still sees the diary. A product that never wrote the diary does not ask you to win that race.

Two different clocks
Deleting history starts after the visit. The engine saved a URL, a title, a time. You later open a pane, pick a range, and remove rows. Until you do, the rows are there. That is not a bug in a daily-driver browser. History is a feature people use on purpose. Forgetting is maintenance. The cost of maintenance is the gap: visit, list, delete. Shared phones and surprise unlocks live in that gap. We will not invent Apple Settings screenshots. The shape is enough: a record existed, then it did not.
Incognito, private mode, and similar lanes try to skip the list for some tabs. They are usually still a mode inside a product that also keeps history. You have to remember which window you are in. You search from a normal tab, you follow a link, you now have a row. The mode did not fail. The habit did. A specialized no-history app exists so forgetting does not depend on that memory. Every tab is already the private session.
Never written means there is no interval in which a Recents row existed in this app. You cannot open a history pane the product does not have. You can still screenshot a tab or leave a preview in the app switcher. Those are operating-system surfaces, not a history database. Timing is about the file, not a claim that the phone has no other ways to show what was on screen.
What deleting history actually does
A history store is local. Clearing it removes rows so you cannot go back through that list, and so autocomplete is not fed by those visits. Website data, cookies, and caches often sit in adjacent stores, which is why a general browser’s cleanup is rarely one checkbox. You pick a time range. You hope the right boxes were checked. That design is reasonable when the same app is also your everyday browser. It is a poor match for a session you intended never to keep.
Clearing local history also does not unsay the request. The site still received it. The network still carried it. Your IP was still the return address. Local deletion and network identity are different layers. They stay different on Safari, on a private tab, and on a forgetful app. If the job you wanted was a new public address, you are shopping for a VPN. This category does not sell that. People still type “delete history” because that is the verb a history-keeping browser taught them. A forgetful browser inverts the order. The mop is for cookies, cache, and site data that had to exist while the page worked, not for a diary.
What private mode is for
Safari private browsing deserves an honest sentence. Tabs opened that way are meant to keep local data more tightly scoped. They are not supposed to land in the usual history list. That is a real distinction from a normal Safari window. It is still Safari: a full browser with history for the rest of life, and a cleanup path for what accumulated in the non-private half. Private browsing is a lane.
On IP, the designs agree. Neither private browsing nor a missing history file is a VPN. Sites you visit still see an address. Your network operator still sees destinations. Headers still leave. Forms still submit. A private mode that people treat as invisibility is being asked to do a job it does not have. The same limit applies here. We do not claim fingerprint spoofing, Tor, a proxy, or anonymity. The app is iOS only.

What this app never writes
In Private Browser Incognito, every tab is a private session held in memory. There is no browsing history feature and no history file to clear. The engine is not hiding a log behind a switch. The list was declined at the architecture level. That is the product, not a setting named Incognito next to a setting named History.
Cookies and cache still exist for the life of the session. Pages need them. Logins on a site, a shopping cart, a theme preference for that visit: those are session objects. They are not a diary of URLs we store so you can browse last week. When the session ends, those objects should end with it. There are no accounts and no sign-in. There is no app server for browsing. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected: no analytics SDK, no ads in the app, no third-party SDKs. We cannot unsay a request a site already logged. The local file is the thing we can refuse to create. That is the honest boundary of this comparison.
What one-tap erase actually destroys
Clear history in a conventional browser is a maintenance task aimed at a list. One-tap erase is a different control. In this app the trash action closes every tab and destroys the session: cookies, cache, and site data. There is a home-screen quick action so you do not have to open the app first. You are not choosing last hour or all time. You throw the working state away. Erased data cannot be recovered, by you or by us. If you needed the tab, it is gone.
Erase is not deleting a history file we do not have. That sentence is easy to skip and it is the point of this article. People search for erase because they still picture a list. The button is real. Session erase does not empty the encrypted download vault. Vault files are AES-256, excluded from backups, and they survive a trash tap on the session. Panic and self-destruct are different verbs, and they are paid kit. The free erase ends cookies and cache. It cannot recall packets that already left.
Neither clock hides an IP
A browser alone does not make you anonymous. Websites you visit see your IP address, the usual headers, and whatever you type into their forms. Your network operator sees destinations. None of that is solved by omitting a history file, by a private mode, or by clearing a list after the fact. Private Browser Incognito is not a VPN. Use that table on any candidate, including ours. If an app cannot say whether a history file exists, it is not finished explaining itself. Safari remains a strong general browser.
