A browser is not a VPN. Sites you visit and your network operator can still see your IP address. Tracking protection is list-based and not absolute: known ads, analytics, and social trackers from bundled lists are blocked on the device, but no blocker catches everything. Private browsing on iPhone is a phrase that carries three different pictures. One is a cloak: nobody saw the visit. One is a Settings chore: later you will clear a list. One is a session: pages work for a while, then the phone has nothing left to show. Only the third picture is a product we can stand behind. The first is a myth. What a private session is

A session is the working state of a browser while tabs are open: the pages in memory, the cookies that keep a login stuck for this visit, the cache that keeps a script from downloading on every scroll. Private, in this design, means that working state is not also written into a lasting history list. When the session ends, the working state is supposed to end with it.

That is a local promise. The site on the other end still received a request. Your network still carried packets. If you signed into an account, that account still knew you. A private session does not rewind those facts. It answers a narrower question: after you leave, does this iPhone still have a recents row, a history pane, or a cookie jar that outlived the tab?

In this app the answer is meant to be no, once you erase. Every tab is a private session held in memory. There is no browsing history feature and no history file to clear, because the file is never created. You do not switch into a private lane. History file versus memory

A history file is a store the browser writes so it can show you where you have been, restore a closed tab from a list, or sync a trail to another device. It is useful in a general browser. It is also the artifact people go hunting for in Settings. Clearing it is a chore with checkboxes and time ranges. Forgetting to clear it is how a shared phone still tells a story.

Memory is different. Tabs live while they are open. There is nothing in a history feature to open later because there is no such feature. That does not mean the phone is empty while you browse. The session has to exist or the page cannot run. It means the durable list is not part of the product. If someone opens the app after a complete erase, they should not find a trail of URLs waiting in a pane we never built.

People mix these two because both get called private. A mode that suppresses the list until you close the window is still a mode inside software that knows how to write the list. A forgetful browser never grew the list. The practical test is simple: is there a history screen at all? If the answer is a clear button, you are in the first design. If the answer is that the control does not exist, you are in the second.

Cookies and cache still have a job

A no-history browser still needs cookies. A login has to stick for the tab you are using. A site may need a short-lived token. Cache keeps the page from refetching the same bytes on every tap. When the session is alive, cookies can identify you to the site you opened. That is expected. Incognito does not cancel an account you signed into. Cache is the same idea with files instead of tokens. It speeds the session. It should not outlive the session once you destroy it. Safari private browsing, without a dunk

Safari private browsing is a real mode. Tabs in that mode are meant to keep local traces tighter, and they are not supposed to land in the everyday history list. People still end up in Settings, clearing website data, because private mode is a mode inside a browser that also keeps history for ordinary use. The private tab is an exception. The default engine still remembers.

That is a fair design for a general-purpose browser. Most people want Recents, Tab Groups, and a list they can search. Private browsing as a lane makes sense in that product. A specialized forgetful browser inverts the default: there is no everyday diary, so there is no lane to step into. The comparison is architecture, not a score. Safari is not a villain in this sentence. It is a browser that also keeps history. We are a browser that does not.

On the network, the two designs agree. Neither is a VPN. Neither hides your IP. Neither is anonymity. HTTPS still encrypts content when the site supports it. Encryption is not a new address. We do not invent Apple network products as if they were ours. Features that live in iOS, iCloud, or Safari are Apple’s to describe. What erase does and does not destroy

One-tap erase is the control that ends the session. It closes every tab and destroys cookies, cache, and site data. Stealth Suite adds an Auto-Erase timer if you want the session to die after you leave. Those wipes are for browsing residue. They are not a factory reset of everything the app can hold.

Session erase does not empty the encrypted download vault. Files you saved on purpose are a separate store: AES-256, no plain copy on disk, excluded from backups. If you use Stealth Suite for downloads, erase is for the session, not for the vault. A panic code can wipe tabs, the entire vault, and the break-in log. That is a different verb. Use erase when the pages should vanish. Use panic when the files should vanish too.

App Lock with a six-digit passcode and Face ID is free in the shipping default. It keeps someone from opening the live session. It does not erase the session by itself. Forgotten passcodes cannot be recovered. The passcode is never stored. It becomes the key. There are no accounts and no sign-in. There is no app server for browsing. Myths that collapse under a session

Myth: private means anonymous. A browser alone does not make you anonymous. Sites you visit see your IP, ordinary headers, and whatever you type. Your network operator sees destinations. We do not claim fingerprint spoofing as a product. Fonts, canvas, and other signals can still be used by a page that looks for them. Myth: blocking is complete. Ads, analytics, and social trackers are blocked by content-blocking rules powered by the open Disconnect lists. The lists ship inside the app and run on the device. They are not downloaded at runtime. No blocker catches everything. Per-site exceptions exist. Treat blocking as a reduction of known noise.

Myth: you need an account for a privacy dashboard. You should not. Search can be Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, or a custom engine. Suggestions stay off until you agree to share a keystroke. Camera and microphone are per-site permissions as websites request them. Rated 17+ is unrestricted web access for adults. You are responsible for what you visit and for using the app lawfully.
